It is possible. VoiceShield which is one of our products can do just that.
In it's simplest form, it's 99.5% accurate. The killer bit is that 0.5%. So,
we always combine it with a pin number (normally 4 digits) and some hardware
ID generated when the user registered.
Now, given those three levels of checking , our false acceptance rate
becomes vanishingly small.
There is still a pin number to remember but most people can manage those
four digits well enough. It's nearly impossible to mimic the voice, we track
voice aging and head colds don't count.
Having said all that, the most accurate , out-of-the-box biometric solution
would be iris recognition.(which we don't do here) The main disadvantage
with that system is the hardware needed. It's very expensive so best used
for physical access control. Voice has the advantage that most PC's have the
necessary hardware already (a sound card) and microphones we give away to
customers (less then one dollar each)
Fingerprints also need additional hardware, although that's getting cheaper
all the time. It still suffers from a rather high false rejection rate
especially on some laptops that have it fitted. Face cream on your fingers,
a cut can all defeat it.
Face recognition is too expensive and the false alarm rate too high.
Some emerging biotechnology techniques such as instant DNA analysis,
people's smell, etc are a fair way off yet.
We also do a solution via cell phone to allow Web access when you're on a
different computer.
One other solution we're working on is the perennial 'I've forgotten my
password' problem, which ties up help desk resources and gets everybody hot
and bothered. Semi automated and very hard to break into.
Hope that answers you question. Feel free to email me if you need more
assistance. The email address is real.
