Any thing apart from Encryption???

Dear all

I would like to get some suggestions and comments to educate my
knowledge as I am a novice for security area, I am keen to learn more
on network security. If someone can arise some comments for me.

I would say that now we are in the digital society or networking
society with technology can facilitate our lives more amusing. I can
conveniently communicate with my parents, my friends who settle far
away from me at the real time by using MSN messenger, or instance
message from other devices via networking technology. Those web sites
such as Hot mail, Yahoo as well as ICQ and so on offers net users
download applications to be in touch each other from anywhere at
anytime. However, I am not sure sometime with security on the network.
A bit we are interacting with our chat buddy with secrete
conversations, such as telling security social number, credit card
number and so on. I have known that among network security
environment, encryption is the technology to secure information during
transactions. However, the number of cybercrime is increasing every
now and then.

My doubt is that apart from encryption technology, is there any other
technologies of network to ensure and secure net users to be safe and
sound on the network during transaction???? If it is yes, so what are
they???? And how do they secure ???

I am hereby to appreciate your comments and suggestion.
