If you transfer the key over the same medium that you transfer the encrypted
message then you have a far bigger problem than the safety of the particular
algorithm.

If you are extremely careful with how you transfer and handle the keys, then
all the alternatives are quite good, not unbreakable, but requiring enough
effort that most people couldn't afford it, unless the information was
extremely valuable. However, if you don't have a very well thought out key
management scheme, PGP has a big advantage, because the key management is
less of an issue.
