I'm glad someone pointed this out. And it's not just the users: consider
"make", which decide which translator to run based (for the most part) on
filename suffixes. And the "cc" and "gcc" commands, which allow you to
provide a variety of different input file types (C/C++/assembler source
files, object files) and determine (by default) which are which based on
extensions.
