There are mayor problems with software patents, they actually protect
everything and nothing. If you look at many of the patents granted in
the US the wage writing and what the clame are. One doesn't know if to
laugh or cry. The sad part is that they actually slow down
development a loot as one all the time has to figure out was could
possibly be patented in this application. Trying to make software that
interacts with other software usually means running over the toes of
a loot of patents. If you look at a standard as mpeg-2 it covered bu
over 400 different patents somehow I think the situation is
ridiculous.
