Encryption is your friend. OTOH, if your country is truly interested
in your mail, they may go after your for using crypto.
You can:
1) Persuade everyone you communicate with to use PGP.
2) Use ssh to connect to a US computer and send/read mail from it.
3) Use hushmail.
4) Random other options.
For you, I suggest 3, with 4 in a close second.
