The first design flaw in the NIS package is that the components are not
separately *installable*. The second is that even though I have disabled
all of the components but NAV, including the firewall, every time I
reconfigure my network adapters, the Network Detector keeps popping up a
dialog telling me that it has found a new network, and asking me to
classify it. This is a totally useless function if the firewall is
turned off. The purpose is to have a different profile for the
firewall for each network the machine is a node in. But it is
meaningless without the firewall, and should be disabled if the firewall
is disabled. Same thing with the NIS modifications to IE. These should
be unhooked from IE if the NIS privacy and parental controls are
disabled. My recommendation is to look for a 'free after rebate' NAV or
McAffee AV, and remove NIS from your system. If you don't need the other
NIS functions, it will just end up messing up and bogging down your
machine in ways you will not appreciate.
