Ok, so you have opened a port, and redirected to your workstation, and
have tried to connect on that port from the outside and it doesn't work.
Does the connection time out or is it refused? I assume you have tested
from a host on your internal lan to the destination port and that works,
to be certain the point of failure if the router.

Have you ever heard of nmap? Run nmap from the outside if you can on
your public IP. By the way, how do you know your public IP? Are you
using DDNS software to track your IP, is it static, or do you just track
your current ip on the fly? This site:

http://scan.sygate.com/probe.html

Will also do a port scan for you (connect from your internal LAN). One
of the things nmap will tell you is if a port is open, closed, or
filtered. Some times your ISP will block certain ports (these will show
up as filtered) although I have never heard of an isp blocking 8080).

Try putting your host directly on the Internet and bypassing the Netgear
box completely. Now are you able to connect from the outside to your port??
