First of all, disable "Hide file extensions for known file types" in the
View tab of Folder options in any windows explorer window. Then it won't
auto-rename it for you, and you'll see what the extension really is.
Second, make sure that the hosts file is NOT user editable. It must be
readable by users and power users, but NOT editable by either -- that's a
big security risk, and your hosts file will be disregarded if that's the
case. Unless you've changed the parent directory, make sure the hosts file
has inheritable permissions, and nothing else, and is owned by
Administrators or SYSTEM.
