Trimming doesn't start at the top enough to have that be an excuse, most
trimming, when done properly, happens in various places. The fact that
OE puts the cursor at the top is a problem, since discourteous users
will start their reply where the cursor starts. Many people have no clue
and don't want to be inconvenienced by having to MOVE the cursor, so
they just type were it puts them, others just don't care.

The idea that they can use a third party fix for OE is akin to thinking
that they will also install Service Packs and Office Updates :)
When I do a reply, I highlite the section of the posters comments, click
reply, and my news reader only takes the highlited section, puts the sig
in the proper place, and puts my cursor of the bottom of the section of
the posters comments. Natural order, something that happens from using a
non-email based news reader client.
