It's OK, we understand, and actually expect top posting from people
using Outlook as their news client.

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1437

When usenet started in the early 80's it was all text based, MS didn't
know anything about the internet at that time, and Outlook didn't exist.

As the years moved forward, before the MS groups were added, and before
anyone had heard about the Web, it was very uncommon to see anyone
posting against the norm. The idea behind usenet is a thread of
discussions in groupings. If you look at a book, IRC, IM, etc.. they all
post below the other users previous messages, and this is how Usenet is
suppose to be used as well. This makes the natural order of a thread
very easy to follow.

If you are using email, then top posting a reply is the norm, as the
user you are communicating with has already read the material you are
replying too. If I send you an email, I've already read the part I'm
sending to you, so a reply at the top, considering email is a semi
personal form of communication, is normal.

In Usenet, it's completely public with thousands of people reading
threads from any starting point, without prior knowledge of the thread
in many cases, and the fact that most Usenet groups are archived in
public. The natural order of progression is top to bottom in reading
something like this. If Usenet were personal or private, the posting
methods like with email would be acceptable. As another person
mentioned, "snipping" anything you are not directly making a reply too
is also the proper method - I use a [snip] to indicate that I've snipped
content at that section. It's frustrating to see people make a one line
reply to a post that wasn't snipped, and to see that the quoted part is
300 lines long :)

In the MS groups it's a lost cause, most of the people that find them
have no idea that MS didn't invent Usenet and most of them are using
Outlook Express, which by default TOP posts replies.

Hopefully this will give you a better understanding of why top posting
is improper, make it easier for you to understand why people ask that
you top post, and help you to convert to a proper news reader client :)
