Netopia Parental Controls

I am a concerned parent who wishes to keep my kids clear of the
seedier side of the internet. McAfee Parental Controls interferes
with my comcast POP3 mail server. I have to turn McAfee Parental
Controls off to receive e-mails. NetNanny also gets in the way.
NetNanny locked my system up because the word "s_x" (I don't want your
news reader to freeze up!) appeared on a job application.

I am down to considering Netopia Parental Controls. Two questions:

1) From people who have used it, what do you think?

2) My kids are like me, inventive and smart. What is to prevent them
from simply disconnecting the cable modem from the Netopia 8586 and
plugging the cable feed directly into the cable modem? Is there
installed software that detects the loss of the Netopia 8586 and locks
things up?

--Thank you,
--Mike
