As far as I am concerned there is no real debate. What you have is a choice.
Most Free/share ware (generally) has a nonexistent or relatively crude user
interface, limited help files and requires some degree of background
knowledge (intelligence?) from the user.
Most commercial ware is in the business of "forgiving" user mistakes and/or
isolating, prevent those mistakes.
IF you wish to invest a little T&E (time and effort) and can research errors
as they occur (Google comes to mind as well as actually buying ... and
reading.... a clue (manual)) then Freeware/shareware might be a valid
choice. The normal caveats of using unbranded software do apply.
