Port 6112 is a common game port and should not be a problem if you
forward it to his computer. I suspect that he'll need more than 6112,
although I don't know that game specifically, Counter Strike needs about
4 groups of IP's forwarded in order to host.

A personal firewall will not do much for him, it will offer the ability
to control rogue applications and detect some problems, but it will also
cause performance issues for his game.
If you are using a linksys router, look for WallWatcher and enable
logging, this will tell you what is going in/out of your network and
give you a good indication when you have a problem.
I use File Zilla FTP server on my systems, it's very easy to setup and
allows for bandwidth control as well as user/password functions that are
not dependant on the operating system.
Kerio may be a little hard to setup if you are using ZA, I would suggest
ZA Pro instead.
