New Kerio wont work on my comp...??

I had an older version that I was using for a couple of years, but a
drive crash lost it for me. I thought I had a backup, but no such
luck.

I downloaded the new one the other day and it totally locked up my
File Explorer in Win 98SE, along with some other very nasty things to
other programs. I had to recall a saved Drive Image to get everything
working again.

I downloaded Kerio again tonight and found the new download locking up
such things as Firefox even though I gave it full permissions for
incoming and outgoing.

Why do companies keep "improving" their damn software to the point of
uselessness?

Are there any good ones out there for free? If not, what is available
for lucre?
