I didn't follow any recommended steps from MS with SP2 which I installed
on two XP Pro machines. It went as smooth as silk.
I would think that nothing MS would put out as a message would say RPC is
shutting down in 60 seconds, which was the common message put out on the
DCOM exploit a few months back. There are too many elements on the NT
based O/S that uses RPC and I think you would be getting an entirely
different message if the O/S was having some kind of true issue with RPC
or the O/S would simply hang or something like that.
