Installation went smooth enough. Reboot - Message was Remote
Procedure Call service is shutting down in 60 seconds. Same in Safe
Mode. Nothing stopped it. MS XP SP2 Support at 888-772-4357 has not
seen this problem with RPC. Nevertheless, with the XP install CD, use
the Recovery Center we uninstall SP2.
FYI ...
cd\$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst gets you into the correct folder.
Enter spunist.txt and with great fanfare, scrolling messages, access
denied messages, SP2 is removed. Reboot > control panel > uninstall
XP SP2. For exact measure, I did a restore to the point prior to the
SP2 installation. XP SP2 is not going on my machine. Btw, total time
on this issue ... 3-4 hours. My machine is a 900 mhz Micron with an
older bios.
Wish I had a $170 external HD backup (one-button version). If you
have not installed SP2 ... good luck.
