1) Don't start with your "shame on Norton" bullkrap. If you do not fully
understand file and printer sharing on Windows platforms and do not fully
understand the concepts behind firewalls, who are you to start that?
2) File sharing works between Linux Samba servers and Windows XP, but it has
never worked with a firewall set up. Sure, a firewall is on my
router/gateway machine (Smoothwall 2.0 Linux), but not on the Samba
servers. The packets generated by file sharing end up looking sort of
weird, coming from all-broadcast (192.168.1.255), loopback (127.0.0.1),
etc. Bottom line is that file sharing from Windows platforms never works
like it is documented to, and any firewall configuration to allow it (i.e.
all ports in and out 135-139,445 ports tcp and udp) never work properly
with Windows. The fault, AFAIK, lies with Windows, so take your
firewall-ignorant self elsewhere: you don't know enough about firewalls or
file sharing to make your claims.
