re: connecting to AOL over TCP/IP
The OP is/was somehow under the impression that he needs to allow 'inbound'
connections to the internal users' PC systems. Whether this is/was
attributed to the article or some other form of misinformation. I do not
know.
I do know that if the OP wants to allow internal clients to reach the AOL
servers over TCP/IP. All he needs to do is ensure that the DSL
Router/Firewall allows TCP ports 5190-5194 'outbound' through the DSL
Router/Firewall. The reason why I say that the OP should ensure this is
because some persons like to configure their DSL Router/Firewall to be
almost as restrictive outbound as it is inbound. Without knowing how the OP
has configured his DSL Router/Firewall I thought it best to point this out.
re: the article
The article you've cited is merely providing a listing of ports associated
with various protocols and applications. It doesn't mean that you have to
open the ports 'inbound' to your PC. Granted some applications (P2P, games,
etc) may require this to be performed, but that's not the subject of this
post in regards to AOL over TCP/IP.
