I've found that clients using Winroute 4.2.5 as an HTTP proxy cannot update
from Microsoft (and many other places). Allowing those machines direct
access to Microsoft's site (i.e. a rule that allows a client to connect to a
specific server's TCP port 80) solved the problem.
Maybe some machines on your LAN are using the Winroute proxy and can't
update while others that aren't, can.
