. . . In YOUR opinion. When I got my first firewall I got many opinions from
this and other newsgroups. Most people did NOT feel that there was a reason
to pay an annual fee. For what? I'll buy a later version when the one I have
no longer does the things I want it to do.

Rubbish! There is a whale of a difference between buying new versions of
software as your old copies become obsolete, and paying monthly fees for a
continuous service, such as having timely access to new antiviral programs
(which I do). Nowhere on the box did it state that I was paying for a
time-based service and nowhere did it state that the software would
self-destruct or be disabled by the company - at ANY time.

>End of story.

Do you think so? Symantec, like the makers of "Quicken", are on the road to
self-destruction through sheer greed and poor public relations. I know a
great deal about computers, but it took me a while to figure out what had
happened to my internet speed, and I knew where to look. What about the 95%
of computer users who will suffer pathetic internet speed until they happen
to download (if Symantec provides one) the patch for this c*ck-up? Will they
rush to buy the next version of Norton, with all the fiddly complications
that might ensue? Or will they simply turn to Mother Microsoft, and click on
the Windows XP firewall? Meanwhile registered users of the Norton firewall
have received NO information from the company on this issue.

I own (yes, I use the word "OWN", just like I "own" CDs and DVDs) several
pieces of software that I deliberately do NOT update. An example is Studio
video editing software. Although updates are offered, I have found by
experience that the trivial benefits of updates are far outweighed by the
glitches that come along with them. So I wait for a version that is bug-free
and stick with it as long as it meets my needs, then buy a new version when
I outgrow the old one. The makers of Studio software allow me to CHOOSE
whether the software is updated or not. So far they have not attempted to
reach into my personal computer and disable the program, the way "Quicken"
did to Quicken 2001 users last year, and the way Norton may be doing now.

Software companies must meet MY needs - not the other way around. Parrot the
company line if you must, but if the company doesn't satisfy its customers,
there won't be a company.
