Hardly a 'norm'. Programmers *** it up, technicians fix it ( oops my
prejudices are showing;->)
The only time you should require outgoing SMTP auth is when your
external IP is NOT from your domain hosts address range - i.e. relaying.
On the FVS318, with any version of software, there is no

FVS318's do not have that field at all, as you said.
Solutions are:
1. What Gerald said about asking Netgear to add the feature to their
firmware
or
2. running a mini-smtp/pop server inside the LAN and specifying that by
IP address in the FVS setup, then checking it via mail client.
