Well, I use a news client, namely XNews, to combine and decode binary
news items. I don't expect a mail client to do every fucking thing
under the sun in a half-arsed way. Instead I expect it to do the
things I want - mail, in other words - supremely well. And it does.
XNews does what you say Thunderbird doesn't as regards sorting marked
threads - and way, way more features than you'd ever need to use.
For mail, Thunderbird has as many, if not more, feastures than Outlook
Express. You can add new features by using extensions - like the
rendering different levels of quoting in varying colours even in plain
text. Or adding a Calendar. Aplying a theme. Editing the reply header.
Adding buttons of your choice to your toolbar. And do on. Useful
features written by people who like the software, as opposed to what
some programmer monkey thinks you need. Tell me where those features
live in Outlook Express. You won't be able to.
And even if some - I doubt all - of OE's security holes have been
plugged (fairly recently as opposed to 'long ago') I would never trust
it. You've only just become able to read html mail in plain text in OE
very recently, for ***'s sake. Same applies to IE, only getting round
to including a pop-up blocker in XP SP2, and still no tabbed browsing.
Opera completely rapes IE up the arse for speed, security,
configurability and just about everything else you can think of. Same
with a combination of Thunderbird and XNews over IE. Security is more
important to me than features, especially when those features are done
better by other apps.
