See my post on one of the reasons why Ad-Aware has been called
"adware"" or "spyware" by the clueless. Also, the COAST thing, which
I've never given much credence in the first place.

Let me be blunt about how it is in the anti-spyware field. Ever since
spyware and adware become (in)famous, everybody and his brother have
jumped in marketing "anti-spyware" products. Ad-Aware and SpyBot are
the originals, and still the best (BTW,
SpywareBlaster/Javacoolsoftware & CWShredder are also excellent). And
they happen to be free, except for Ad-Aware Pro. What's funny is that
all commercial, paid-for anti-spyware programs, excluding Ad-Aware Pro
and Pest Patrol, are complete and total crap; the paid anti-spyware
tools have incomplete databases, may use old database sets ripped off
from other vendors, and quite a few contain spyware or adware
themselves. I will also include NIS (sorry, Neosadist) in this, for
the first and arguable for the third reasons. The point is that,
ironically, the free tools happen to be the best and most well-tested,
while the $30+ tools, with the sole exception of the two mentioned
above, are utterly worthless.
