You can't uninstall IE, but if you can install another browser and
make it your default. (I highly recommend Mozilla (www.mozilla.org)
It's high'ly resistant to pop-ups and other annoying web pages.
You stil have to keep IE, and your entire patched. Go to
www.microsoft.com, look for "windows Updates" on th elower right of
the screen, and click on it.
After it scans your system pick "Critical Updates" and install them
all. This will reboot at least once. Repeat until all the patches are
installed. DO it once a month or whenever you hear that an important
patch is out.
Out of suspicion, I use IE to do my WIndows Updates. (that's the only
thing I've ever used IE for on my current generation of systems.) I
also turn off my AV product.
