You can tell if it's working by turning it on, and seeing if the ARMED
and SYS A lights stay solid after about 2 minutes - anything else and
you have a problem. The fans should also run.
As for the ability to just try it to see if it works, the problem is
much like Windows XP registration - they Key phones home and gets
authenticated at some point. If you try and get support, or you try and
get updates with another installation you might find that the first
registration no longer works.
With a single installation of the software I can manage MANY FB units
(that were purchased). So, if you were to get the CD/Install key from
the seller you would be good to go...
The same issue happens with the other vendors, cept PIX, but it has
issues too.
As for being cheap, I've bought a few FB-II's on ebay for under $400
each, no key, nothing, and they've all worked fine.
As for testing XP, you really don't know if it's running fine until you
do a windows update and install XP SP1 - you may find that the key they
used was bootleg and you can no longer get OS updates, only security
updates (which some require XP SP1 now)....
If you call WG sales, you may be able to get a 30 day eval key.
