That's probably because with the firewall on, multicast is blocked or the
selection of port numbers is limited, and with it off, multicast isn't
blocked or there's no longer a limited number of ports, respectively.
There are dynamic ports that you can open up that aren't really a security
risk. But I'd do this instead: I'd set the rules up to allow total
un-restricted access between your computers. The rules for that would look
something like this:
"Allow Networking"
Allow
Incoming and Outgoing
TCP or UDP
Any port
Destination: 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.255
Source: 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.255
