Shame on me. I'll kindly agree I should have read OP more carfeully
before commenting. So I'll try to be less crappy on this.

To me, security does not, and particulary on systems that do not provide
basic access control such, stop at shuting down all listening ports, as
one have to care about malwares and other backdoor stuff. You'll ISP AV is
there to prevent them, but can OP be sure of its efficency ? Not I
particularly like PF stuff that have defaults and can be avoided in many
ways, their basic functionnalities can address some security issues a
standalone host can face.

So, yes, if OP feels comfortable with dealing safely with downloaded
stuff, attachments and so on, he can live very well without AV or PF of
any kind. But if he doesn't, maybe investing some time to install a free
(as in free beer) is not such a loss of time.
