You don't say what your experience was with ZoneAlarm.
I've been using ZoneAlarm (the free version, not the Pro version) for a few
years with my cable modem, and am satisfied. Using it has been pretty easy
and intuitive. (Sometimes the extra features in an "advanced" version are
more than one needs and make it harder to understand.)
One thing I like about ZoneAlarm that routers don't do (afaik): it lets you
say which programs on your PC are allowed to use the Internet. This has
saved me from rogue software trying to "phone home" surreptitiously from my
PC. It also blocks incoming probes like routers do.
