Thanks for some really helpful info and the links were interesting too.

I just read my user agreement with Mediacom cable and it says:

...................................
 If Customer has a residential account, then:

(i) The Service may only be used for personal and household purposes and may
not be used to host a business Website or for other commercial purposes;
(ii) The Service may be used only at Customer's residence within Customer's
Mediacom Cable System;
(iii) Not more than one computer may be connected to the Service;
(iv) The Service may not be used in conjunction with routers or servers,
including Electronic Mail, NAT, DHCP, DNS and WEB servers;
................................

I guess this means I cant use a router and if I do and screw things up they
will not be happy and will probably not help me.
So I guess I cant use a router.
