Did anyone see the tribune article by James Coates that tells a person
that a firewall is overkill for a dial-up modem connection?

How do people like this get jobs?

Here is part of what he wrote:

"Hack attacks work by continually scanning the entire Internet for
specific ranges of IP addresses, and they rarely bother with the dial-up
ranges because the connections are so hard to use. Not only do people
hang up their telephone modems after short periods of use, but service
providers automatically shut them down if the machine stays online
without use for an extended period.

In fairness, I should add that most firewallmakers offer products that
cover dial-up connections, as well as broadband, so you can opt for a
third-party program like McAfee Firewall, Zone Alarm or Norton Internet
Security Tools.

But it's probably more insurance than you need."

I gained a new client on Tuesday because their office uses dial-up at
ever computer - they were hacked and had no clue. It was the latest
Nachi virus, so, in less than two weeks of being connected they got
infected.

The should shoot IT people like him.

/rant mode off
