No you Don't because you are here and as you said, and I quote you, "I
wish to learn". No my fine feathered friend, you are just fine and
along with the rest of us, willing to learn in order to better protect
yourself.
The functional imbeciles just plow along, totally oblivious to the
destruction they leave in their moronic wake. They are eaten up with
Virii and Trojans and don't even realize it and every time they make
any contact with anyone else on the web, they pass their infestations
along.
Let me tell you, firsthand, about a functional imbecile. I agreed to
go to this home and help straighten out a messed up system belonging
to a friend of a friend of a fend of a friend. You know! When I got
there, what I first say was a desktop with 100's of icons on it. This
person had no concept of folders and their organizational usage.
Every program, every download, every file that they had ever made,
installed, opened or downloaded as on their desktop.
Checking the fragmentation of their HD showed that they had never ever
done the slightest bit of maintenance and they had an astounding
4.5gig of unattached clusters on their HD which I later found out that
were probably created by this person always turning off their computer
with the power switch instead of turning it off the right way through
Start/Shutdown. They actually thought that the blue screened chkdsk
operation at bootup was normal even though it plainly said at the
bottom that it was doing this because windows was shut down
improperly. Duh!
They had never downloaded a single MS critical or suggested update...
Not a Single One! Looking, I did notice that they did have auto
notify setup on their system and I asked why they weren't doing the
downloads when notified. They said that they just close the popup
because they are always getting annoying popups about this that and
the other all the time and just never had the time to deal with them
at the moment. I later found out the other popups they had been
ignoring were their AV update notices.
Needless to say, after I updated their AV Definition files and ran
scanned their drive, they had 6 biggun's on their system of which
three where the type I am told make themselves work by having the host
pass them on via email. This guy had been passing Virii on to his
friends for who knows how long!
The only thing to do was a full format/restoration. I did that, got
him up-to-date on all his MS critical and suggested updates and got
his AV up to date and left it to him because I was told by the people
that ask me to go over there that all that had been done before a year
or so ago along with some educating of this guy as to how to keep it
all up of which he never did.
So that is where he becomes a functional imbeciles. No matter how
many times someone comes in and saves him, no matter how many times he
is shown and educated as to how to save himself, he will never do it
and will always end up in the same sad situation.
Regards,
T.R.
