ICS = Internet Connection Sharing
The gateway machine runs a service that shares its internet connection
with other machines on the local network. For instance, you have one
machine with a dial-up internet connection. You have other machines
on the local network that need internet access. The machine with the
internet connection can run ICS and share its connection so the other
machines can access the internet without having to have a direct phone
line connection. Works with broadband, too, but usually people with
that type of connection will use a router to share the access instead
of having to go through a gateway machine.
