It looks like I need the IPC$ share. I have another server on the
little network which I use to mirror data to. When I remove the IPC$
from the primary server, and click on the workgroup, it tells me that
the "Server is not configured for transactions." and I can't see the
other server any longer.

2. The tech note at MS says it will remove the shares but not the IPC$
share.

I want to keep the IPC$ but I would like to be able to prevent any
outsider from accessing it. IS it a port that needs to be closed I
wonder?
