I have a SMC7004ABR router which up until recently still had the 1.0
firmware on it. When I downloaded and installed the 1.42012 revision
I was no longer able to use the 'Virtual DMZ Host' function which is
used to open one internal IP to the internet (everything else worked
fine). Customer support sent me progressively earlier firmware
versions and the second one they sent (1.40018) restored the function.

So at the very least, make sure that you have a copy of the current
firmware saved away before you change anything.
