Maybe some are waiting (or already have) to adopt NAT routers with
cable modems built in.

I know Time Warner in Wisconsin has a disclaimer stating that they do
not support the use of anything other than a direct connection from
the cable modem to the PC. What they really mean is that they will
not provide tech support. But the wording is just ominous enough to
make it sound like they don't allow the use of any such devices.

That is why I have been able to charge $450 to home users for
installing a Linksys box, connecting their other systems, setting up
Kerio, Norton AV, and showing them the basics and best practices.

I love the suburbs... The schools lock down their systems so much
that most of the kids haven't learned any of this rather simple stuff.
And with parents watching news shows about kids being robbed, raped,
or abducted by internet stalkers, they are only too happy to buy a
sense of security.
