At least in the US, so many people are keeping value information on the
computers, because computers are becoming and everyday fact of life. Bank,
credit card, tax, social security card, etc, etc information is being kept
on the computer.

Crackers/thieves look for vulnerable computes and try to crack them and get
that information. They use automated process probing the Internet looking
for the right machine to crack. Once they get the correct response, they are
coming in to take a look around to see what they can get and move on to the
next victim, identity theft is a cash cow for them.

The victims are those who don't know to use a firewall, the firewall has
been mis-configured, or someone lame enough to think that one can hang on
the Internet without a FW or firewall like appliance of some type period.

For hackers, it's becoming more and more difficult for them to get to
business networks and such, because of a <g> like this one. So they are
turning their attentions towards the *home users*.

So to say that you are being singled out, I would say no. You are just being
probed for vulnerability.

IMHO, on today's Internet and depending upon what platform you are running,
you got to have it. OR any PFW that has IDS in the application.
