WHY RIAA PLAN TO SUE INDIVIDUALS WILL NOT WORK
WASHINGTON, DC - The Recording Industry Association Of America has announced
that it will begin suing individuals who download music. However, such actions
will backfire on them in the end.
What Hillary Rosen and company do not realise, is that you can hide behind
an open Socks5 proxy server on the net, and be next to unidentifiable. If
someone uses a proxy server in the right country, there is no POSSIBLE way
they can identify them.
They can, and probably will, use offshore proxy servers, where identifying
indivuals will be all but impossible. For example, as of this writing
218.22.169.98 is an open Socks5 server on port 1080, eminating from Anhui
province, in China. Somebody could, as of this writing, configure their Kazaa
client to use this proxy, and the RIAA would NEVER be able to find out WHO
was behind that proxy. It would LOOK like that person was in China, and the
RIAA would NEVER be the wiser.
It is this kind of trickery that people will use to evade identification
by the RIAA, if they do start suing individuals in large numbers. If people
do this, as we suspect they will, the RIAA will go CRAZY trying to identify
people.
If the Religious Right, who have been trying to trace us down gor YEARS,
cannot find us, then RIAA would NEVER be able to find music pirates, if they
start using offshore proxy servers. You CAN hide, if you know how to do it.
The RIAA is probably resorting to this measure, becuase some of the services
are located in countries, where the RIAA is powerless to sue the companies
themselves. Did you ever wonder why Gnutella has never been sued yet? They
have not been sued because Gnutella is located on Christmas Island, where
there is virtually no law at all on the Internet. The "deflectors" that put
you on the Gnutella network end in ".cx". That means that Gnutella is located
on Christmas Island.
SUPREME COURT PORN RULING HAS ONE FLAW
WASHINGTON, DC (ADMS) - The Supreme Court ruling that libraries in the US
must filter porn has one major flaw. Unless the librarians are unusually smart
with computers, people will be able to circumvent any filtering system.
The problem is open proxy servers, especially those on "unusual" port
numbers. Ports 23,80,81,1080,3128,8000,8080, and 8081 are the normal ports
for proxies. However, an increasing number of proxies are being placed on
port numbers all over the place, which makes detecting and blocking proxies
next to IMPOSSIBLE.
For example, there is a proxy, as of this writing, being operated by an
AT&T Broadband customer in the Portland, Oregon area on port 22799. I have
seen proxies running on ports as high as 57746. People connecting to proxies
on port numbers that high would run right under the admins noses and nobody
would know what was going on.
For any of you who are reading this who are corporate admins, the
increasing number of proxy servers, both Socks and HTTP, that are appearing
on the net on unusual port numbers, this means that your investment in hard-
ware and software to filter content has been all for naught. Someone could
be using proxies on high-numbered ports, to hide their activities, and you
would never know what was going on. A recent survey of several popular adult
chat rooms has found that the highest usage is during work hours in the USA,
and that people are using these proxies to hide what they are doing, and their
bosses will NEVER know what they are up to.
The same is true for library computers. Someone can hide their destination
with a proxy on an unusual number, and network admins will never known what
they are up to.
