Well, I use the free version of Outpost, and it's by far the most
comprehensive firewall I've ever used. I too use a router to network
my computers/connect though to the internet. My Linksys BEFSR41 router
blocks unsolicited incoming traffic, and Outpost blocks/tames my
applications, if they want to connect to the internet. :)
You can use the built-in filters to block advertisements, active
internet content (allow java etc on a 'site-to-'site basis if
necessary). There's also an email attachments filter, and a content
filter to block 'sites that contain certain words- or websites/ip
addresses. The interface/rule-set making method is extremely
intuitive- even novices will find it virtually a 'breeze' ('snap' in
America) to configure.
I've used Zonealarm, Sygate and Kerio also. I'm fairly experienced,
and used Kerio for the past year or so.
As you are using a router, you would be crazy to pay for a 'pro'
version of this, or any other firewall. If you want to show your
appreciation to the company, I'm sure they'd welcome a purchase of the
'pro' version. :)

No, I don't work for Agnitum!!! 'Outpost' just happens to be the best
software firewall around. :)
