Firewall challenged ( mental block for firewalls ) :-(

Win XP SP1
Cable on 24-7 with Emule

Up until recently I just turned off the firewall when using Emule or other
P2P
Was getting slower and slower.

Got paranoid, or smart, not yet sure which, and turned back on latest Black
Ice.
See a new update has been added since I wasnt using it before.

Not to sure how to set up firewalls beyond bare minimum
So looked at Emule and followed these basic instructions ( think I did it
right? )

" Alternatively, with some more advanced firewalls, or firewall settings you
will need to open ports 4661 and 4662 TCP for both incoming and out going
connections, as well as port 4665 UDP for both incoming and outgoing
connections."

Suddenly, I'm zipping along, faster than ever on Emule, both up and down
( Not sure WHY I am zipping along since opening it?
What was slowing me down before? )

Having had problems in past d/l using Zone Alarm with other P2P aside from
donkey network, I had just given up

But I'm getting blasted with consistent red icons and see tons and tons of
UCP or TCP_ Probe_Other ( TCP seems to dominate more than UCP)
I figure that this is many other Emule users not being able to connect but I
dont question.
Hey, if I am zipping along, why screw with it when it works, right? LOL

Need to reboot hour ago
Come back up and get hit and hit like never before with same Probes,
although only running basic start ups, not Emule
Suddenly see same TCP probes but not 1 or 2, suddenly one address alone is
hitting 1098 times, but all others drop dramatically to
68, 95, 76, etc.

Hmm
Dont like this
Turn on sudden extra XP firewall ( forget trying to figure this one out )
Suddenly all activity stops

Just now decided to go download 2 new, as of today, security updates
Still have on XP firewall, so not yet sure if they made a difference.

Wondering?
Is this normal activity?
I dont recall ever seeing so much, come at me so fast, one after another?
Or do I not need to be concerned?

I am only because all of these seemed to begin happening when I opened ports
per suggestion of Emule?

( Sorry, long )
Thx
