I also have homed in on the free version of Outlook (for the time
being) after also evaluating the free versions of ZA, Sygate and
Kerio. One requirement I demanded is that the product must handle the
Exploits test at PC Flank without being phased. Without a firewall, my
Win 98 original blue screens on the KOD exploit. Kerio flunks this
test so it was eliminated. Sygate free is too "flaky". ZA is ok but
doesn't have the neat plug-in features that Outlook offers.

I also find complete stealth on all tests at the Sygate site but only
after unchecking Echo reply in the ICMP system settings. I've tried
all the port scanning tests I can find, and Outlook has been fine.

It's unfortunate that you have to spend much time testing, learning
about, and living with each firewall. But there really is no
substitute for doing this. I encourage the OP to do his own series of
evaluations on his particular PC and OS.
