Getting IPCop to work

I have installed IPCOP on a spare box. It is running, and I can log into
the admin pages, but the docs don't cover my specific installation, and I
can't get the details worked out.

I have a DSL modem, which is also a router. It has ip addr x.x.x254

If I plug all my machines (winders) into my switch, and the connect the
DSL to the "uplink" port, everything works fine (with no firewall).

Here's what I've done:

red nic: x.x.x.200
green nic: x.x.x.252

green nic into switch, red nic into modem (router). I can log into IPCop

Then I changed the default gateway address in the network control panel
to point to x.x.x.252 instead of x.x.x.254. Doesn't work. I tried
switching the DNS to x.x.x.252 -- Nothing. I tried putting the green nic
into the "uplink" port, but then I can't even ping the box.

So my questions would be:

1) How should I run the wires? Should green into switch, red into router
function?

2) How do the firewall, the router, and the ISP interact? Specifically,
should my DNS address be the firewall or the DNS the ISP directs me to
use?

3) Once I get it working, are there some good resources for figguring out
how to set up rules to filter packets?

Thanks

Bob
