Kerio Personal Firewall can run as a service or an application. I run
it as a service on my NT4 system. When my system starts up, I see the
splash screen go by before I log on. http://www.kerio.com/
I'm sure many other firewalls can/do run as a service as well. KPF
happens to be what I use.
