| Yeah, it's sad. I like the linksys stuff, and i just ordered the
firewall
| router (yippee!!), but it's sad that a good company like symantec is
going
| down the drain with that. So sad. Hope they wise up. Where were the
days
| that you could always get free antivirus updates from online?
I suspect that Linksys Router/Firewall may well also be the Christmas
present I buy for myself! <g>
Neo, the paradigm (within the industry as a whole) is once again shifting.
You may not like it, I may not like it. Doesn't really matter; to _all_
of the software vendors, it's primarily about revenues (and I suspect the
hardware vendors won't be far behind, for that matter). It isn't the
brave new world of PCs and 'open source' anymore, for the most part; it's
about at least putting bread on the table (and maybe buying a Hummer or a
Porsche or a really humongous home).
I think I recently saw a thread over in GRC from Sven Schaefer to the
effect that you won't get the NAV updates in the future unless you either
'subscribe' to the update service or buy a new upgrade of the application
itself.
We'll always have some freeware/shareware vendors that take a different
tack, but (in the final analysis) many of them (like ZoneLabs) will
suddenly decide it's time to make a few bucks. To some extent I can
understand it, these guys have to eat, just like the rest of us. Not all
of them, by any means, are able to live off the royalties from prior fame
and fortune. There come a point, inevitably, where the importance of
food on the table tends to outweigh the gratification of 'serving the
masses' at little or no cost. Still, the AV vendors, in particular, are
going to have to put out signature updates, no matter what (if they care
to remain in business). Like you, I am far from convinced that the prices
they're charging are inline with the expenses incurred (and not reimbursed
from new sales and new versions of the application itself).
Still, there comes a point where the whole thing starts looking a bit
sordid (not to say cheap) and grubby. Still, apparently, that's the way
things are these days.
