Shouldn't, but I'm not totally sure about this. I know that file and
printer sharing is done with netbios over tcp/ip on window$ systems, so I
thinking if it's removed from your network properties, it shouldn't be a
risk. Still, a firewall is nice. If you have winxp, it includes a
firewall, you just have to enable it.

Very well. Mostly, I'd say you don't have to worry about hackers, just
about stupid teenagers that download stuff on the web to try to compromise
people's computers (i.e. "script kiddies"). These people don't really
understand, they just want to have some fun. Almost any firewall will keep
a script kiddie out.
Uh, it depends on your use. If you're at home with kids, I recommend norton
internet security, due to it having parental controls. If by yourself, zone
alarm is sufficient. If on a complex network, norton personal firewall is
more customizeable.
Still, if you just want protection, zone alarm is free. I'd go with that.
But remember that security is more than just a firewall. A firewall is
important, but not enough. Antivirus is important. But also, I'd suggest
NOT using file-sharing stuff (gnutella, bear share, napster, etc), since
those have been found to include things for the makers of the software to
"spy" on you. Yahoo messenger can also be a problem in that area.
Another thing is that you need to tighten the security of your operating
system. Run windows update frequently. I don't suggest installing
everything, but the critical updates, and things that say "recommended
update" should be enough.
Another nice thing is to get internet explorer 6. It has privacy control
built in. I usually do an advanced setting with it, enabling first-party
cookies but blocking third party cookies, and enabling session cookies.
Also, under the security zones, I put all at default, then move all sliders
up to medium (second from the highest) except restricted zone, which I leave
set at highest.
There is just too much information to mention here. I hope some of this
helps. I'd like to put together a web page that has screen shots of all
this, but I don't have the time. Still, if you ever need me, email me at
neosadistSUCKS@hotmail.com (remove the "sucks").
