Yes, but at least one machine on a peer to peer LAN ought to be the master
browser (i.e. this service to Automatic on only one computer, the rest to
manual). Not necessary, but recommended.
But this doesn't have much of anything to do with Netbios that I can think
of. If you have a mixed LAN (i.e. some win9x machines on the LAN), you
should leave Netbios over TCP/IP enabled for their sake, and your LAN
Manager authentication level to LM and NTLM responses.
If you're using all win2k/xp, however, you can go with "use DHCP for netbios
over tcp/ip settings", and increase LM security to "NTLM responses".
I finally got my mixed home LAN to work, based on the help of those at
microsoft.public.win2000.networking or whatever the newsgroup is called.
Still, the person who first started this thread needs to block all 137-139
from the internet (inbound and outbound), but allow it on their LAN. If the
firewall can't distinguish between WAN and LAN, get a REAL firewall lol.
