Hello,
I recently (today) upgraded to ZA3.1.395.
It worked fine when the laptop is hooked
up to the school LAN, but it prevents MS-IE
from accessing the internet when I'm using
ADSL at home. According to the troubleshooting
help, it is because the ADSL servers are not in
my trusted zone. Funny, it was never a problem
before.
I tried lowering security to "medium" for the
internet zone, and that allowed IE to access
the internet. But I don't want it on medium,
I would like it on high, like it was before (due
to my superstitious beliefs).
Here's the problem with putting sympatico's
servers in the trusted zone. Their DNS's
don't stay the same. Not being a network
guy, I'm not sure whether that's related to
the fact that my IP address is dynamically
assigned (I would expect not, based on
relative ignorance). However, sympatico
support staff claim that the DNS addresses
change (they certainly differ from the DNS's
specified in the book that accompanied the
DSL service).
There are other complications that are
admittedly due to my ignorance. My impression
is that there are a host of software and hardware
devices between the actual computer "core"
(whatever that may be) and the network e.g. cards,
drivers, layers of virtual widgets, the modem itself,
etc.. So I'm not sure which one of these links in
the chain I should be trying to get the IP address
of to put into the trusted zone. And I'm not sure
which is the dynamically assigned. WinIPcfg is
very nice, but I'm not sure which numbers I can
trust if the laptop can't even talk to the servers,
which may change with each session.
Sympatico staff certainly don't know the answer.
I conveyed to them the advice from ZA's trouble-
shooting guide, that I need a range of IP addresses
from them (again, I'm foggy about which addresses
I need e.g. for my laptop? for the servers?) They
bascially cannot provide any advice on this; it took
about 8-9 emails to wrest this information from
them. Depending on who handles the call or
email, I get different answers; in the final answer,
they response was that the exact range was
confidential. I think they just got exasperated.
And what about the server which dispenses IP
addresses for my laptop? Is there such a beast?
Should I also try to find out its address and put it
in the trusted zone?
Thanks for any suggestions or anectdotal success
stories.
Fred
P.S. Strangely enough, cygwin's telnet still works
even when MS-IE doesn't. So does VNC.
