What a hardware firewall doesn't protect against is the stuff that you allow
through your firewall. Some of this stuff, like email, comes with
attachments that are worms or trojans that send information FROM your
computer to another address on the internet without your consent.

I recommend a hardware firewall, software firewall, antivirus software
updated frequently, and spyware software. I have a working solution for
each. You'll have to figure out your comfort level with getting this stuff
setup.
