I was able to fix this over the weekend...definately seemed virus
related. Here's what I did:
I disabled my internet connection (cable modem Ethernet) and rebooted.
When my PC came back up, Personal Firewall was running. I
immediately uninstalled it, and then uninstalled SystemWorks too. I
have XP, so I then installed the XP Service Patch 1, the reinstalled
SystemWorks, then installed AntiVirus 2003 (running LiveUpdate on all
as I installed them).
A virus search found & destroyed 1 virus, that may have been the cause
of all of this mess.
Finally, I loaded Personal Firewall again, and am now back in
business.
So maybe that virus was effetive if my PC came up and established an
internet connection immediately, so when I disabled the XP internet
connection the programs could run again.
Thanks for the suggestions!
