I did likewise with the same result. However, having been setting my status
manually since this issue has arisen, I occasionally forget to switch to
away when I leave. When I return, sometimes hours later, Messenger still
hasn't switched to away.

I also considered that often Microsoft software (as well as some third party
software) will use Windows files to carry out some of their tasks. For
example, I once decided to disable Task Scheduler and found that Norton
System Check would not run as scheduled with Windows Task Scheduler
disabled. However, I checked my programs list for anything I may have
blocked from accessing the internet. Ironically, the only thing that I
haven't approved is ZApro!!
I don't recall ZApro ever asking permission to access. Every other
program my system has done so.
I also noticed that Privacy is set to "On" for Windows Explorer as well
as Internet Explorer. I don't recall how I may have done this.
Could any of these settings be causing the problem?
